Christ Descended to the Dead

For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. Acts 2:27

“Where Are You?”

We end the year by looking at the beginning of the Book with the first question God asks in the Bible: “Where are you?” (Genesis 3.9) While it is a question addressed to the first sinners, it is a question fit for every sinner. It essentially is God asking, “Where are you in My sight?” Some 6,000 years have passed since God first asked this question. Billions of men & women have lived,
died, & gone to their place. Billions of men & women now live on earth. I suppose trillions of questions have been asked from trivial to tantamount by all who have lived & are living. But no question is more sobering, more serious than this question from God: “Where are you?”

Whether pious churchgoer or dogged atheist; whether educated or uneducated; whether rich or poor; whether young or old – all have an immortal soul that is in need of salvation. We will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ the righteous judge someday. We must be prepared for this appointment (see Hebrews 9.27). We will all be forever in heaven or hell someday. Let us flee the wrath to come and gain heaven.

My brothers and sisters, as Christians we know the solemn and sober things contained within the Bible about what awaits all men and women when this life is over. Further, we believe every word of the Bible to be true and right. Therefore, we must be more diligent in seeking that all hear the life-giving message of the gospel. Let us ask them with all sincerity and gentleness, “Where are you?” We merely ask the question. We may help them as best we can to take honest inventory. But they must ultimately answer the question for themselves: Where do I stand in God’s sight?
