Is Jesus the Only Way to God? (2)

Last week we began to consider the exclusivity of the Christian claim that Christ is the only way to God. Both Jesus and Peter made the affirmative that only through Christ can one be saved and approach God. Not to be left out the apostle Paul declared: “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5, ESV). Catholicism says we pray to dead saints who
intercede for us. They will especially pray to Mary, the mother of Jesus, when they pray the “Hail Mary” prayer. Paul is plain: There is no other person through whom we can approach God except Jesus. He is the sole mediator. No one else in history can save us except Jesus – not Muhammad, not Buddha, not Krishna, not Joseph Smith, nobody. The reason is because no one else could or did die for your sins. The Bible says, “She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). Only Jesus as God could die for your sins as the perfect sacrifice. Only Jesus as man did die for your sins. No one else qualifies as a fit sacrifice unto God except Jesus.

So quick recap: Jesus says, “No one comes to the Father except through me.” The apostolic college continued that Truth by declaring, “Salvation is in no one else.” Only Jesus can save people from sins. Christians are often lambasted as narrow-minded because we teach what the Bible says about how one gets to God. But even Jesus exhorts us, “Strive to enter through the narrow door!” (Luke 13.24) While there may be other paths or ways on the mountain of God, some of them rather wide and well-trodden, they only lead to destruction. The world may tell us there are many paths to God, but Jesus speaks a better word: “The gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few” (Matthew 7.13). ~ Nick Perez
